Bangladesh has ended up eight points up in the Corruption Perception Index released by the Transparency International.But the graft watchdog’s Bangladesh chapter says the improvement is not significant.
Bangladesh now ranks 136 out of the 177 countries in the Index — up eight notches from last year when it was ranked 144 out of the 176 countries.
From the reverse, Bangladesh ranked 16th in the list of the most corrupt countries. That is three notches better than last year.
The Berlin-based organisation released the report on Tuesday all over the world.
Its Bangladesh chapter released the report in a press conference at its Banani office in Dhaka on Tuesday.
TIB Executive Director Dr Iftekharuzzaman said Bangladesh scored 27 in the perception index, one point better than last year.
He, however, described the improvement as ‘insignificant’.
TIB Chairman Sultana Kamal said high level corruption did not come down and misuse of power still existed.
Denmark and New Zealand were ranked a joint first as the least corrupt country.
The most corrupt nations are Afghanistan, North Korea and Somalia with 8 points in the CPI.
