BCL protests against Bangabandhu’s sculpture defacing

Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) on Sunday protested on the Dhaka University (DU) campus against the demolition of an unfinished sculpture of Bangabandhu in Kushtia.

Demanding exemplary punishment and arrest of those involved in the vandalisation, hundreds of BCL leaders and activists gathered in the Teacher-Student Centre (TSC) and shouted slogans.

BCL President Al Nahian Khan Joy, General Secretary Lekhak Bhattacharjee, DU chapter President Sonjit Chandra Das and General Secretary Saddam Hossain also joined the protest.

On Saturday, Bangladesh Jubo League and BCL announced through a press release that they would stage protests across the country on Sunday.

In another press statement, the ruling party’s student wing BCL made an announcement about its procession and rally at the DU campus. Also, all BCL units across the country had been asked to stage demonstrations.

Miscreants vandalised an under-construction sculpture of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in Kushtia city early Saturday. The face and hands of the sculpture were damaged.

The demolition took place amid protests by Islamist organisations across the country over the setting up of Bangabandhu’s sculpture. Meanwhile, the law enforcement came down on anti-sculpture protesters in the city’s Paltan intersection on Friday.

They brought out a rally from Baitul Mukarram National Mosque after Jumma prayers without Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s (DMP) approval, the law enforcers said.
