BD remittance inflow to hit $18-20bn this fiscal year

Dhaka – Mentioning that the remittance inflow has significantly gone up since the announcement of 2 percent incentive, Finance Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal hoped that the annual remittance inflow will reach $18-20 billion within the current fiscal year. He came up with the announcement while briefing reporters after a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Public Purchase at the Cabinet Division conference room on Wednesday.

Currently, the country annually receives about $14 billion in remittance.

The minister said remittance senders will get 2 percent incentive on every transaction upto $1,500.

He said remitters’ claims of 2 percent incentives will remain as usual and when they or their receivers make the claims, they will get the facility.

“It doesn’t matter how many transactions are made in a day, but each transaction shouldn’t cross US$1,500,” the minister said.

He said it may take a day or two to settle the things to start giving incentives.

Mustafa Kamal, however, said no remittance transaction made so far by Bangladesh expatriates since July 1 will be left out of the incentive facilities.

He said if any transaction of remittance remains within the limit of $1,500, nobody from banks will ask any question. “But if the limit crosses, the sender has to place relevant documents about the source of the remittance,” he said.

The government in the national budget introduced the 2 percent incentive to encourage remitters to send remittance through the banking channel instead of any illegal one.UNB
