State Minister for Home Asaduzzman Khan on Wednesday said the border guards of Bangladesh and Myanmar exchanged gunfire at Jadimura of the NafRiver in Teknaf upazila due to misunderstanding.
“However, the cause of misunderstanding between the border guards of the two neighbouring countries will be found out very soon through a flag meeting and they’ll remain alert in the future to avoid recurrence of such incidents,” he said while talking to reporters at the ministry office.He explained thatBangladesh and Myanmar both use the Naf River, when a boat of BGB got trapped in a fishing net in the river on Wednesday morning the BGP members assumed that the boat crossed the border line, which prompted them to open fire on the BGB men, he added.
The BGB man who was picked up the BGP members will be brought back home after the flag meeting, he said.
Earlier on early Wednesday, two groups of members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and Myanmar Border Guard Police (BGP) exchanged gunshots at Jadimura of the NafRiver in Teknaf upazila, leaving a BGB member injured.
The BGP men forcibly picked up a BGB personnel after the gunfight.
The injured BGB member was whisked off to Teknaf Upazila Health Complex at first and later shifted to Cox’s BazarSadarHospital.
Asked about the death threat to 25 prominent personalities by Ansarullah Bangla Team, the junior minister said investigation agencies are working to hunt down the miscreants behind it.
Those issued the death threat are under the surveillance of intelligence agencies, he added.
About the ongoing hartal, enforced by Jamaat protesting the verdict of the Supreme Court (SC) that upheld the death penalty of war criminal Jamaat leader Ali Ahsan Muhammad Mojaheed, the minister said the verdict was the reflection of public demand.
He said Jamaat only enforced the hartal but there is no sign of hartal across the country.
About traffic jam, the minister said additional traffic police will be deployed at major points to reduce traffic jam in the capital. He said the Inspector General of Police is monitoring the whole matter.
Asked about security measures for the holy month of Ramadan, Asaduzzaman said close circuit cameras will be installed in each shopping mall to ensure security there.
Besides, members of several law enforcing agencies will be kept on alert to fend off any trouble. – UNB
