The Bangladesh Poribesh Andolon (BAPA) and Jatiya Nodi Rakkha Andolon on Sunday urged Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury to request India’s new prime minister Narendra Modi for not to implement the Indian inter-river linking project.
The two environmental organizations said in a statement, if the project is implemented, the environment, eco-system and economy of Bangladesh will be severely affected.“So, we demand that the speaker will request the India’s prime minister in their first meeting to refrain from implementing thmente project citing its adverse impact and concern of Bangladeshi people,” the statement said.
Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury is expected to have a one-to-one meeting with Modi on May 27, a day after he will be sworn in.
The inter-river linking project part of which is now under implementation is to divert the water of the Brahmaputra and Ganges rivers through different canals to different regions of India depriving and ignoring the outcries of Bangladesh and some of its own states.
Diversion of Ganges water started much before. With the diversion of the Teesta, a a Bramaputra tributary, diversion of a part of the Brahmaputra has also been started.
