Biman Bangladesh Airlines will resume its New York flight from June 4 this year after nearly eight years.
The flight will operate via Birmingham. Biman’s Dhaka-New York flight remained suspended since July 2006 due to financial losses and serious shortage of aircraft.Briefing reporters at Biman’s Balaka Headquarters in the city, its Managing Director and CEO Kevin Steele said they have planned to lease two B777-200ERs from Egypt Air for five years to run Dhaka-Birmingham-New York flights. The flight will be operated twice weekly.
After getting approval from the Biman Board, the national flag carrier will sign the lease agreement within next few days.
Steele hoped that one aircraft will arrive in February while another in March.
About choosing Birmingham as its transit, he said Birmingham will not charge from Biman for its ground handling and parking. Besides, no airline is currently operating Birmingham-New York-Birmingham direct flight.
“So, our target is to catch up local New York bound Barmingham passengers,” he added.
The Biman CEO informed that the national carrier will start its flights for a number of new destinations from coming summer. –UNB, Dhaka
