BNP-led 20-party alliance demanded the government to cancel its decision to hike the prices of power and gas; otherwise it would launching a non-stop programme from the day after the hike.
BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir yesterday made the announcement at a press briefing at party headquarters following the secretaries’ level meeting of the 20-party alliance.“We have come to know that the government decided to increase price of power and gas that may be effective from January 1. The government has taken the decision for indulging in corruption and plundering money,” he said.The BNP leader mentioned that the Awami League govt had increased the prices of power and gas in several phases that cause suffering to the lower and middle income families.
“So, we request the government to withdraw its decision to hike the prices of power and gas anew. Otherwise, non-stop programme will be launched from the next day following the hike of their price,” he said.
Asked about the details of the programme, Fakhrul said, “You will see when we will give the programme.
He said that on the one hand the government is importing huge quantity of rice from India, on the other it is campaigning that the country has become self sufficient in food production and exporting rice. “It is nothing but a joke,” he said.
The BNP leader demanded of the government to immediately stop importing rice from India so that farmers can get their fair price.
He reiterated that the remarks of Prime Minister about the USA would have a negative impact on the bilateral relations between the two countries.
Earlier, the 20-party leaders discussed the latest development in the political arena and alliance strategies to make Khaleda Zia’s December 13 public meeting at Kanchpur, Narayanganj a success.
The meeting decided that the respective party of the alliance would take their own preparation to make the public meeting a success.
Dr Redwanullah Shahedi of Jamaat, Ahmed Abdul Quader of Khelafat Majlish, Mostafa Jamal Haider of Jatiya Party (Kazi Zafar), Dr REdwan Ahmed of LDP, Khandaker Lutfor Rahman of Jagpa, Golam Mostafa Bhuiyan of Bangladesh NAP, among others, were present at the meeting. – Staff Reporter
