BNP demands Khaleda’s immediate release, fresh neutral polls

Dhaka, July 26 – The BNP yesterday demanded the government to immediately release of all political leaders including party chairperson Khaleda Zia and hold a fresh election under a neutral government. Otherwise, the party warned that they would intensify movement further taking people with them.
“We will intensify the movement further if the government does not free our ailing chairperson Khaleda Zia and other state prisoners immediately. We’ve taken a vow to intensify our movement… We’ll surely be able to wage the movement,” said BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir while talking to reporters after placing wreath at the mazar of late President Ziaur Rahman.
He further said they are strongly demanding the government to create a democratic environment by freeing Khaleda and all political prisoners.
He went to visit Zia’s grave together with party joint secretary general Habibun Nabi Khan Sohel, who was released from jail recently.
Mirza Alamgir also urged the government to immediately withdraw all the false cases filed against Khaleda Zia and other party leaders.
He termed the 11th parliament as illegal and called upon the government annual the present parliament and to hold a fresh election under a neutral government.
Please, take initiative to hold a free and fair election under a neutral government allowing the people to franchise their voting rights, he said adding, if you (government) do not do it, the country’s people will never forgive you.”
The BNP leader alleged that their chairperson Khaleda Zia is seriously ill but she is not getting necessary treatment at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU).
“Our leader has been kept in jail unfairly for over 18 months in false cases. She’s now seriously sick, but doesn’t get proper treatment,’’ he said.
Khaleda Zia was sent to jail on February 8 last year as she was convicted in Zia Orphanage trust graft case. Later, she was also convicted in Zia Charitable Trust graft case and now she is serving her 17-year term in the two cases.
She has been undergoing treatment at the BSMMU since April 1 this year.
BNP joint secretary general Khairul Kabir Khokan, Secchasebok leader Mir Sharafat Ali Sapu, Kazi Abul Bashar and Ahsanullah Hasan, among others, were present on the occasion. – Staff Reporter
