BNP leader Pintu charged in theft case

Dhaka, May 17: Prime accused in 21 August grenade attack case BNP central vice chairman and ex-deputy minister Abdus Salam Pintu charged in theft case in a court in Tangail on May 16.
Salam Pintu was brought to Tangail court of Senior Judicial magistrate Nowrin Mahbub from Kashempur Jail amid tight security. The Judge read out the charges brought against Salam Pintu. The count framed charges against 11 persons including Salam Pintu. Adv. Golam Mustafa, Farhad Iqbal pleader infavour of Salam Pintu said that the charges are biased and political.
The case in brief is that Zahidul Islam AL leader is the plaintiff of the case. He complained that he was AL agent in national polls of 2001. Salam Pintu was annoyed with him. Being instructed by Salam Pintu others accused intruded into his Bhadrasimul village home under Bhuapur Upazila and beat his wife and other inmates. They looted cash and kind from his house. He lodged the case after 11 years.
It is noted that Abdus Salam Pintu was elected MP from Gopalpur-Bhuapur constituency in 1991 and 2001 and was appointed deputy minister in 2001. He was awarded death penalty in 21 August grenade carnage case.
He has been in jail since January, 2008. – Staff Reporter
