BNP vows on Shaheed Day to free Khaleda, restore democracy

Dhaka, Feb 21 – BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir yesterday expressed his vow to free party’s ailing chairperson Khaleda Zia.“We are taking oath today to free Deashnetri (Khaleda) and restoration of democracy in the country,” he said while talking to reporters after placing a wreath at Central Shaheed Minar in the city to mark the International Mother Language Day and Martyr Day.
The BNP leader said the nation observed the day when he said there is no democracy and rule of law in the country and rights of the people have been snatched.
He regretted that the spirit of the language and independence martyrs has been undermined
Mirza Alamgir demanded the government of releasing the former premier, who is serving a 17-year jail term in two graft cases, saying that as per constitution she deserves bail but she is not given it.
Earlier, the BNP leaders led by Mirza Alamgir visited the graveyards of language martyrs at Azimpur and prayed for their departed souls.
BNP leaders Abdus Salam, KHairul Kabir Khokan, Habib-un-Nabi Khan Sohel, Shahid Uddin Chowdhury Anie, among others were present on the occasion.
Meanwhile, the family members of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia yesterday met her at her prison cabin at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University Hospital.
The five-member delegation went to the hospital at about 3:00 pm and came out after one and a half and hours but they did not talk to the media people.
The government gave them persimmon to meet the former premier to mark the International Mother Language Day and the Martyrs’ Day upon their application.
On Wednesday, Shamim Iskander, brother of Khaleda, sent a letter to the inspector general of police (IGP), seeking permission to meet her. This has been confirmed by Khaleda’s media wing officer Shairul Kabir Khan.
The family members who met Khaleda yesterday are Kaniz Fatema, wife of Shamim Iskander, Khaleda’s nephew Shafin Iskander, his wife Oroni Iskander, Ovik Iskander, and Shahria Haque.
The ailing BNP supremo is undergoing treatment at the prison cabin of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University since April 1 last year.
It can be noted that the hearing on bail petition of Khaleda in the Zia Charitable Trust graft case is due to be held on Sunday. – Staff Reporter
