BNP wants Shahjahan Khan to quit

In the wake of fierce student protests against the killing of their two fellows in a road crash in the capital, BNP on Wednesday branded Shipping Minister Shahjahan Khan as the ‘instigator of the transport sector chaos’ and demanded his resignation.

The party also suggested the government to hold talks immediately with the agitating students to overcome the current ‘crisis’.

In a statement, BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir also demanded exemplary punishment of the bus driver responsible for the killing of two students of Shaheed Ramiz Uddin School and College.

On Sunday, Diya Khanam Mim and Abdul Karim Rajib, students of the college section of ShaheedRamizUddin School and College, were killed as a ‘Jabal-e-Noor Paribahan’ bus ploughed through some students in front of Kurmitola General Hospital on Airport Road, triggering the widespread protest that caused immense public sufferings.

Fakhrul said people’s life and livelihood have now become very uncertain due to the government’s utter failure on the all fronts.

The BNP leader said the killings of adolescent students are the reflection of misrule.

He said the government has failed to tackle the situation emerged following the student movement.

Fakhrul alleged that anarchy has long been prevailing in the transport sector due to minister Shahjahan Khan’s role who is also an important leader of the sector.

He said the number of unskilled and untrained drivers and unfit vehicles are growing due to Shahjahan Khan’s role, leading to huge losses of lives on roads and highways.

The BNP leader also criticised the government for police attack on students who took to the streets protesting the killing of their fellows. “I strongly condemn and protest the inhuman attacks on the students.”

He demanded the release of those students arrested during their agitation.
