Boat race marking Sultan’s birth anniversary held

A traditional boat race on the river Chitra marking world famous painter SM Sultan’s 89th birth
anniversary was held on Thursday August 29. The programme was arranged jointly by SM Sultan
Foundation and district administration in assistance with Bangladesh Rowing Federation. Mobile
Phone Company Bangla Link sponsored this traditional boat race, one of the most favourite forms of
entertainment of the village people.
At 2-30 pm the boat race for women and at 3-30 pm the boat race for the men began. Four boats
of women and twenty two boats of men took part in the competition ranging three nautical
kilometres. A huge number of people irrespective of cast, creed, age and gender enjoyed the
traditional boat race standing both sides of the river Chitra.
At the end of the competition the prize giving ceremony was held on the river near Bandhaghat
area with deputy commissioner (in Charge) of Narail  Hawladar Mohammad Rakibul Bari in the
chair. Additional Commissioner of Khulna division Mr. Ashok Kumar was present at the occasion as
chief guest. Commercial head of Bangla Link Babul Haque, general secretary of Rowing Federation
Monirul Islam, general secretary of Bangladeh Olympic Association Ashikur Rahman Miku were
present at the prize giving occasion. – Our Correspondent
