Cement-laden ship capsizes in Bay: Nightmare for marine life

A cement-laden lighter ship was capsized after being hit by another vessel in the Bay of Bengal near Sandwip Channel at Bhashan Char in Sandwip upazila on Sunday.

Mohammad Selim, director of Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BWTC), said the Dhaka-bound cement-laden ‘MV Sheikh Fardin’ ship sank in the Bay of Bengal after being hit by lighter vessel ‘MV Bashundhara-27’ in the morning.

However, 13 crews of the ship were rescued with the help of local people, he added. Some 1500 tons of cement were sunk in the bay.
