Chaminda Vass inspires young cricketers to improve fitness

Dhaka — Legendary Sri Lankan pacer Chaminda Vaas on Tuesday said young cricketers have to concentrate more on fitness as modern cricket is getting tough.“Every young cricketer should develop their fitness as modern cricket is getting so fast and competitive. I see there’re many talented cricketers in Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. They should develop their fitness to go to the next level,” he told the media at the national academy ground in Mirpur.

Vass is currently working as the head coach for the Emerging Sri Lanka Cricket team, now touring Bangladesh to play a three-match one-day series and two-match four-day series against their Bangladeshi counterparts.

Sri Lanka Emerging team beat Bangladesh in the first game of the three-match one-day series by 186 runs. Vass thinks the Sri Lankan boys are at a good point to seal the series with one match to play.

“The boys are enjoying here and doing their homework properly. And I’m pretty sure that they’ll do well when it comes to the second one-day. It’s up to them to go to the middle and perform and enjoy the game. I believe they’ll do better for the Sri Lankan cricket,” Vaas added.

Bangladesh failed to produce a good performance in the first game. They failed in all three departments and handed the game to Sri Lanka. However, Vass thinks any team can go through this kind of phrase.

“You can’t say that was bad. It was just another game. Every team can go through this bad time. I’m pretty sure they’ll come back strongly. They aren’t taking things lightly. But in the end, the best team will win the series,” Vaas said.

In his international career spanning 13 years, Vaas scalped 761 wickets – 355 from 111 Tests, 400 in 322 ODIs and 6 in 6 T20Is. The southpaw was one of the best left-arm pacers in the history of cricket. One of his memorable performances came against Bangladesh during the 2003 World Cup when he registered a hat-trick in the very first over of the match.UNB
