By Zaheer MohamedGuyana U-19 opener Tagenarine Chanderpaul told Kaieteur Sport yesterday that he is eagerly looking forward to the upcoming West Indies and Bangladesh U-19 seven match One Day Series to be played in Guyana in October.Chandepaul scored one century and two half centuries in the recently concluded Regional U-19 three day tournament and one fifty in the 50 over version which earned him his first call up to the regional U-19 side.
He stated that he is training very hard for the series. “I am thrilled to be named in the West Indies U-19 team; I am really looking forward to the series and want to make Guyana and the region happy. Basically I haven’t set myself any goals but would like to occupy the crease for long periods and get among the runs,” he added.
Chanderpaul, who hails from Unity on the East Coast of Demerara and plays for the Everest Cricket Club, feels the host have a very good chance of winning the tournament. “I think we have a good team and the players are capable of giving a good account of themselves. We also have home advantage,” said Chanderpaul.
He said that his father Shivnarine gives him valuable advice from time to time. “I am learning a lot from my father. He told me to concentrate, play the ball on its merit and occupy the crease for long periods,” Chanderpaul stated.
He informed that he currently trains at the Gandhi Youth Organization ground on a daily basis and is also looking forward to the U-19 World Cup in 2014.
The left handed batsman feels Guyana could have done a lot better in the regional U-19 competition.
Left arm spinner Gudakesh Motie Kanhai and batsman Shimron Hetymer are the other Guyanese selected on the team. – Via Google News
