Chhatra Odhikar convener suspended over rape allegation

Dhaka, Sept 23 – Bangladesh Chhatra Odhikar Parishad (BCOP), a national student organisation, has suspended its convener Hasan Al Mamun over the alleged rape of a Dhaka University student. The executive council of the student body took the decision on Wednesday.
A three-member probe body was also formed to investigate the allegation, BCOP said in a press release. The committee members are BCOP DU unit chief Bin Yamin Molla and central committee joint conveners Tarek Rahman and Rafia Sultana.
They have been asked to submit their report within 48 hours.
Mamun and five others were accused in two separate cases on Sunday and Tuesday at Lalbagh Police Station under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act and Kotwali police station under the Digital Security Act.
The other accused are former Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (Ducsu) vice-president (VP) Nurul Haque Nur, Nazmul Hasan Sohag, Saiful Islam, Nazmul Huda and Abdullah Hil Baki.
Bangladesh General Students’ Rights Protection Council – which lead the quota reformation movement in 2018 – was later renamed Bangladesh Chhatra Odhikar Parishad on February 17 this year while marking their second founding anniversary. – UNB
