CNG filling station owners have protested the remarks of Industries Minister Amir Hossain Amu that the government has a ‘plan to gradually shut down CNG pumps’.
In a statement on Sunday, Bangladesh CNG Filling Station and Conversion Workshop Owners expressed grave concern over a media report that the government is contemplating gradually shutting down the country’s all CNG filling stations.The statement, signed by Abdullah Al Mamun, the convener of the association, said the CNG sector has started its journey under the direct patronage of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in order to save the environment from a health disaster.
At present, the sector has been saving about Tk 12,000 crore equivalent foreign currency through substituting fuel import. It is also paying 25 percent revenue to the government by consuming only 5 percent of the total gas used in different sectors, mentioned the statement.
It also said the pollution in the barometer of the environment has come down to a significant point. When the whole world is encouraging the CNG use for the sake of environment, it is totally illogical to stop the use of CNG in Bangladesh at this point.
The association urged all to refrain from making any adverse comment about the CNG sector and also come forward to protect it where about Tk 15,000 crore has been invested and about 5 lakh people are dependent.
The CNG station owners will address a press conference on Monday to present their views on the ongoing political stalemate. – UNB
