Coast guard, bandits’ gunbattle rocks Sunderbans

Coast Guard officials said they seized arms and ammunition after a gunbattle with ‘forest-bandits’ in the Sunderbans early on Wednesday.Though no one was nabbed, one shotgun, six single-barrel guns, 200 rounds of bullets, five mobile phones and some daggers were recovered from the site of the gunbattle, Mongla Coast Guard west zone Commander Mazedul Haque said.
The group the Coast Guards challenged belonged to the notorious ‘Jahangir Bahini’ — the encounter was fought at Geowakhali area in western Sunderbans on Shibsa river.
Coast Guard conducted a raid upon a tip off about the location of a group of the whereabouts of ‘Jahangir Bahini’, Haque said.
The bandits opened fire as the Coast Guard approached, he said. “The gunbattle lasted for an hour, from 5:15am to 6:15am, in intervals.”
The bandits retreated into thick jungles. It was not clear whether they suffered any casualty but the Coast Guard suffered none.
