Cop hailed as hero for saving newborn from dogs

Chattogram, Aug 21 (UNB) – A police officer is being praised for protecting a newborn from dogs in the port city on early Tuesday.

Sub-Inspector Mostafizur Rahman and tales of his selfless act went viral on the social media within hours.

He said he was standing in front of Akteruzzaman Centre near the end of his night shift when he saw two dogs fighting in front of Sonali Bank while another was pulling something.

“I approached to see what it was and found a newborn,” Rahman, posted at Double Mooring Police Station, said.

The child was taken to Agrabad Mother and Child Hospital. Later, it was shifted to Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH).

On his way to CMCH, SI Rahman said he also found a woman at Badamtoli intersection. “Locals said she was mentally challenged. She only identified herself as Ayesha. It appeared that she had given birth only hours ago,” he said.

When asked about her child, the women in her mid-20s pointed to the place where the dogs were. “I presumed that she was the mother of this child and took her to hospital,” the SI said.

The woman and the child are doing well, he said.
