Dhaka, Dec 12 – Amid the global concern over the second wave of Covid -19 infections, the health authorities in Bangladesh on Saturday reported 34 more deaths in 24 hours, raising the death toll to 7,020.
Besides, 1,329 new cases were reported during the period, pushing the country’s total tally to 489,178.
The mortality rate, however, is 1.44 percent, said the Directorate General of Health Services.
So far, 417,503 patients – 85.35 percent — including 3,185 new ones in the last 24 hours have recovered.
Bangladesh reported its first cases on March 8. The infection number reached the 300,000-mark on August 26. The first death was reported on March 18 and the death toll exceeded 6,000 on November 4. It took only five weeks to reach the death toll to 7000 from 6000.
Until now, 2,956,882 tests have been carried out, including 12,630 new ones, and 16.54 percent of the patients turned out to be positive.
Bangladesh is seeing 2872.34 infections, 2451.48 recoveries, and 41.22 deaths per million.
Global Situation
A total of 71.1 million people have been infected with coronavirus globally and over 1.5 million of them died, according to data compiled by Johns Hopkins University (JHU).
The global caseload stood at 71,148,364 with 1,596,108 fatalities on Saturday.
The United States recorded 15,851,014 cases as of Saturday morning with 295,522 deaths.
The total number of Covid-19 cases in the US topped 15 million on Tuesday.

Shots for health workers and nursing home residents are expected to begin in the coming days after the Food and Drug Administration authorized an emergency rollout of what promises to be a strongly protective vaccine from Pfizer Inc. and its German partner BioNTech.
Initial doses are scarce and rationed as the U.S. joins Britain and several other countries in scrambling to vaccinate as many people as possible ahead of a long, grim winter. It will take months of work to tamp down the coronavirus that has surged to catastrophic levels in recent weeks and already claimed 1.5 million lives globally.
The U.S. is considering a second vaccine, made by Moderna Inc., that could roll out in another week. In early January, Johnson & Johnson expects to learn if its vaccine is working in final testing.
On Saturday morning India has griped second slot leaving Brazil behind on the thirds place in caseload. Delhi has been one of the most COVID-19 affected places in the country.
But Brazil has been occupied the second place with world’s second-highest COVID-19 death for past several weeks.
Brazil has registered 6,836,227 cases and 180,437 deaths while India recorded 9,826,775 cases with 142,628 deaths, according to the JHU data.
Russia registered 2,602,048 cases with 45,923 deaths, while 113,019 people died in Mexico with 1,229,379 caseload.
Infections have been reported in more than 191 countries and territories since the first cases were identified in China in December 2019. – UNB
