Covid-19: Bangladesh sees 39 deaths, 2,212 new cases

Bangladesh on Tuesday saw further rise in both the number of coronavirus deaths and new confirmed cases.

The health authorities announced 39 deaths in the past 24 hours, pushing the death tally to 6,254. Besides, 2,212 new cases were detected during the period, bringing the total tally to 436,684.

The death rate stood at 1.43 percent, said the Directorate General of Health Services. So far, 352,895 patients — 80.81 percent — including 1,749 new ones in the last 24 hours have recovered.

Bangladesh reported its first cases on March 8. The infection number reached the 300,000-mark on August 26. The first death was reported on March 18 and the death toll exceeded 6,000 on November 4.

Until now, 2,572,952 tests have been carried out, including 15,990 new ones, and 16.97 percent of the patients turned out to be positive. Bangladesh is seeing 2564.11 infections, 2072.12 recoveries, and 36.72 deaths per million.

So far, 3,283 have died in Dhaka division, 1,223 in Chattogram, 382 in Rajshahi, 482 in Khulna, 209 in Barishal, 259 in Sylhet, 286 in Rangpur and 130 in Mymensingh.

Global situation

The Covid-19 caseload stood at 54,992,571 on Tuesday, according to data compiled by Johns Hopkins University.

Besides, the death toll from Covid-19 climbed to 1,326,768. The United States remains the worst-hit country with 247,175 deaths, and over 11 million cases so far.

Governors and mayors across the US are ratcheting up COVID-19 restrictions amid the record-shattering resurgence of the virus that is likely to worsen because of holiday travel and family gatherings over Thanksgiving, reports AP.

A record-breaking nearly 70,000 people were hospitalised with the coronavirus in the US as of Sunday, according to the COVID Tracking Project.

Deaths in the US are running at more than 1,100 per day on average, an increase of over 50 percent from early October. The virus is blamed for more than 246,000 deaths and over 11 million confirmed infections in the US.

Besides, with 216 deaths reported in the last 24 hours, Brazil’s death toll from COVID-19 hit 166,014, the Ministry of Health reported on Monday.

The ministry said another 13,371 cases were recorded in the last 24 hours, raising the national caseload to 5,876,464.

The ministry explained that there are delays in data collection in some states, so the information should be updated in the coming days.

India is in the second spot in terms of cases, with 8,845,127 cases as of this morning. It has reported 130,070 deaths so far – the third-highest in the world.
