Davis Cup: Croatia rallies to stun US 3-2 in Portland

Dhaka – Borna Coric beat Jack Sock 6-4, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 to give Croatia a 3-2 comeback victory over the United States on Sunday in their Davis Cup quarterfinal match.Marin Cilic set up the deciding fifth match by beating John Isner 7-6 (11-9), 6-3, 6-4 in the first reverse singles match on the Tualatin Hills hard courts.After the United States swept the singles matches Friday, Cilic and Ivan Dodig kept Croatia alive Saturday with a four-set victory over twins Bob and Mike Bryan in doubles.Croatia will host France in the World Group semifinals on Sept. 16-18. Croatia reached the semifinals for the first time since 2009.It won its only Davis Cup title in 2005.The U.S. lost for the fourth time in 161 tries when leading 2-0 lead in a Davis Cup tie.The 19-year-old Coric was on the way to winning when he broke Sock’s serve in the ninth game of the fourth set.Cilic, playing his third match in three days, overcame a hot-serving Isner in the first set to win in a tiebreaker. Isner won 31 of his 35 service points, but dropped three during the tiebreaker as Cilic won 11-9.Cilic finally broke Isner’s serve during the eighth game of the second set, leading to a 6-3 win and a two-set lead.Unlike Friday’s first singles match, when Cilic lost after leading Sock by two sets, the world’s No. 12-ranked player finished off Isner by breaking him in the ninth game to pull out a 6-4 win.
Cilic is 6-0 against Isner.
