Rumours are in the air that Deepika Padukone, who just started her Hollywood journey with Vin Diesel’s xXx: the Return of Xander Cage, is starring opposite to Tom Cruise in The Mummy reboot.

According to a report published on entertainment website Spotboye.com, the Bollywood star has auditioned for The Mummy. However, the casting directors are yet to confirm whether Deepika got the part or not. The role is that of an Egyptian girl and Deepika auditioned for it in Los Angeles.

A source close to the project was quoted saying, “They are looking at other options. Even if Deepika doesn’t make the cut, the very fact that she was in the running for an important role in a Tom Cruise starrer is quite an accomplishment in itself.”

Earlier, there was buzz that Dedh Ishqiya actor Huma Qureshi had auditioned for the lead role opposite to Tom Cruise. However, the role went to the British actor Annabelle Wallis, who will play an archaeologist in the film.

The Mummy shall be the remake of a 90s popular franchise starring Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weiz in lead roles. Tom Cruise will play a Navy Seal officer named Tyler Colt. The film also stars Sofia Boutella as the main antagonist.

The Mummy is one of the many remakes planned by Universal Pictures as an effort to create an interconnected universe for their classic monsters like Dracula, Frankenstein, the Invisible Man, the Bride of Frankenstein, and vampire hunter Van Helsing.

Alex Kurtzman is set to direct the The Mummy reboot from a screenplay by Jon Spaihts (Prometheus).
