Delhi Chess: GM Ziaur Rahman in 2nd position

Dhaka – Bangladesh Grand Master Ziaur Rahman of Saif Sporting Club is in the 2nd position in the 16th Delhi Open International Rating Chess Tournament with 7.5 points upsetting the Netherlands’ super GM Sergey Tiviakov (Rating-2584) in the 9th and penultimate round match held in the Indian capital of New Delhi on Monday.GM Zia played with white pieces against former Bangladesh chess coach GM Tiviakov choosing the Torre Attack system. GM Tiviakov made a blunder in his 42nd move and GM Zia replied to threat to take GM Tiviakov’s Knight at 43rd move when GM Tiviakov resigned.Tahsin Tajwar Zia, son of GM Ziaur Rahman, and Mezanur Rahman of Bangladesh earned 3 points each while Mohammad Abul Kashem bagged 2 points after the day’s 9th round matches.In other 9th round matches, Mezan beat Arnab Kumar Mallick of India, Kashem got walkover against Maharjan Dipak of Nepal while Tashin lost to Polakhare Aryan of India.The 10th and last round matches will be held on Tuesday where GM Zia will play against Indian GM Karthikeyan Murali.UNB news agency
