Dengue claims two lives in Khulna: Eid poses nightmare

Khulna, Aug 4 (UNB)— A 70-year-old woman and a schoolboy died of dengue on Sunday – the first reported deaths from the mosquito-borne disease in the district.

The deceased are – Morjina Begum, wife of Ismail Sardar; and Monjur Sheikh, 13, son of Babul Sheikh of Khaja Danga village of Rupsha.

Morjina was admitted to Khulna Medical College Hospital a week ago and died in the early hours of Sunday. The Assistant Registrar of medicine department Dr Partho Pratim confirmed her death.

Monjur, a class X student of Kazdia Government High School, was admitted to Gazi Medical College and Hospital around 11pm on Saturday. He died about seven hours later, said the hospital’s Chairman Gazi Mizanur Rahman.

Since the beginning of this year, 136 people were hospitalised in Khulna with dengue. Currently, 80 patients are being treated at hospitals, according to government data.

This year, the dengue outbreak has been severe with hundreds of people being infected every day. Most of the cases are being reported from Dhaka.

On Saturday, 1,649 new patients were hospitalised and two people died of dengue.
