Denied treatment at four hospitals, schoolboy dies in Khulna

A schoolboy suffering from liver cirrhosis died without treatment on Tuesday afternoon after he was turned away by four hospitals.

Rifat, son of Mohammad Kashem, was a resident of Khalishpur Housing Bihari camp no-1.

He was taken to Khulna Medical College Hospital around 2:30pm after his condition deteriorated. “But the authorities there refused to admit him saying there was no doctor,” his grandfather Kalimuddin said.

He was given medicine and the family was asked to bring him there on Wednesday.

Later, Rifat was taken to Khalispur Clinic but was denied admission there, prompting the family members to take him to Surgical Hospital. There, doctors suggested to take him to Moylapota Hospital but he was denied admission as well.

He died in the evening without receiving treatment, said Kalimuddin.

Dr Sheikh Atiar Rahman, assistant director of KMCH said the hospital doctors are under pressure following coronavirus. But the situation was not so severe that general patients would not get proper treatment. He said he would look into the matter.

Civil Surgeon Dr Sujat said treatment for general patient has not been stopped at any hospital and promised to look into the issue.
