‘Detained 519 Indian fishermen to be sent back’

Dhaka, July 13 (UNB) – A total of 519 fishermen, who were detained for Bangladesh’s water territory in Patuakhali, will be sent back to their country following the due process, said Bangladesh Coast Guard on Saturday.

“Bangladesh has already communicated with India through the foreign ministry,” Lt Commander M Hamidul Islam, public relations officer of Bangladesh Coast Guard, told UNB over phone.

He said the Coast Guard will hand over them to their Indian counterpart on completion of the formalities.

Hamidul also said their return is being delayed due to inclement weather. “They’ll be sent back once the weather becomes favourable,’’ he said.

Members of Bangladesh Coast Guard detained the Indian fishermen along with 32 trawlers from Rabnabad Estuary of the bay on July 7.

The detainees are from different districts of West Bengal.
