DHAKA -Dhaka Abahani Limited confirmed their quarterfinal spot as group champions in the Federation Cup Football beating Bangladesh Muktijoddha Sangsad Krira Chakra by 2–1 goals in their last group D match held today at Bangabandhu National Stadium here.
With the day’s victory, Abahani Limited secured six points from two matches to emerge top from Group D while Bangladesh Muktijoddha Sangsad Krira Chakra failed to secure any point playing the same number of outings and made their exit from the tournament race.
Group D champions Abahani will play group B runners-up Uttar Baridhara in the fourth quarterfinal match scheduled to be held on January 4.
Mohammedan Sporting Club Limited also confirmed their last eight spot as group D runners-up after Abahani’s victory on the day and they will meet group B champions Saif Sporting Club in the second quarter final to be held on January 2.
Afghan defender Masih Saighani and Haiti recruit Carven Belfort both scored one each for Abahani in both halves while Rohit netted for Muktijoddha Sangsad.
In the day’s match, Masih opened an account for Abahani in the 30th minute while after the resumption Belfort doubled the lead scoring the second goal for Abahani in the 69th minute of the match.
Rohit however pulled one back scoring a lone goal for freedom fighters in the 87th minute of the match.
Earlier, Abahani made a flying start in the tournament beating their arch-rival Mohammedan Sporting Club by 3-0 goals while Muktijoddha suffered a 1-4 goal defeat to Mohammedan in both their respective group opening matches.BSS
