Dhaka University bans ‘inhuman, unethical’ Rag Day

Dhaka, Sept 02 – Describing it as ‘unethical and inhuman’ practice, Dhaka University authorities have imposed a ban on Rag Day celebration on the campus.
The decision was taken at a virtual meeting of the Academic Council of the university on Wednesday. Students celebrate Rag Day with much festivity, including colourful rallies and flash mobs, on the campus, marking the completion of their four-year graduation course.
Some incidents of students getting carried away however managed to cast aspersions on the event usually held during ‘Freshers Week’.
Making scathing criticisms of the practice, the Academic Council announced the ban. “The meeting decided to ban the so-called Rag Day, an inhuman, cruel and unethical festival, on the Dhaka University campus,” said a media release.
Besides, the meeting recommended the formation of an ‘Ethical Review Committee’ in each of the university faculties.
The meeting also approved a proposal to take the unfinished examinations and publish the final results in a coordinated manner following the hygiene rules.
Presided over by Vice Chancellor Prof Md Akhtaruzzaman, the meeting was virtually attended, among others, by Pro-Vice Chancellor (Admin) Prof Muhammad Samad, Pro-Vice Chancellor (Education) Prof ASM Maksud Kamal and deans of different faculties. – UNB
