Dhaka, Oct 5 – Gono forum General Secretary Dr Reza Kibria on Saturday alleged that the interests of the country’s people have not been protected through the bilateral documents Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina signed with India.Reza came up with the comments while talking to reporters after a meeting of Gonoforum presidium members at party President Dr Kamal Hossain’s Bailey Road residence.
He also voiced doubt whether the current government has the ‘capability and willingness’ to protect the interests of the people of Bangladesh.
Earlier in the day, Bangladesh and India signed seven bilateral documents, aiming to take the relations between the two countries to the next trajectory.
The documents were signed, exchanged, adopted and handed over after a bilateral meeting between Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and her Indian counterpart Narendra Modi at Hyderabad House in New Delhi.
The Gono Forum general secretary said the government is also being unable to deliver on all other fronts. “They couldn’t resolve the Rohingya crisis and ensure our fair share water from Teesta and other common rivers. They also failed to bridge the trade gap with India. They’ve failures everywhere from the agriculture to foreign policy.”
Reza said the government will be forced to quit power and hold a fair election soon due to its incapability and failures.
He said their party is working to strengthen its organisational strength and intensify the activities of the Jatiya Oikyafront to oust the current government from power.
About the recent anti-corruption purge, he said it will have no significance if the ‘big corrupts’ are not arrested. “Only some fourth and fifth grade ruling party leaders has so far been arrested. The government must arrest the top leaders who are involved in corruption if it’s really sincere about curbing graft.” – UNB
