‘Drug peddler’ killed, alleged Sharbahara leader found dead

Barishal, Aug 8 – A suspected drug peddler was killed in a reported gunfight with Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) at Harinafulia in the city on early Thursday, reports UNB. The deceased, Malek Fakir, 35, son of Entaj Fakir of KDC area in the city, was wanted in several drug-related cases.
Tipped off, a team of Rab conducted a drive in the area early in the morning, said Nurul Islam, officer-in-charge of Kotwali Model Police Station.
As soon as the elite force reached the area, the criminals opened fire, triggering a skirmish.
Malek was caught in the line of fire and died on the spot but others managed to flee, police said.
Meanwhile, an alleged leader of outlawed Purba Banglar Sarbahara Party was found dead in the Garai River in Sreepur Upazila of Magura on Thursday, another UNB report from Magura said.
Police said the deceased was Firoz Joardar, 35, son of Akbar Joardar of Kalikhali in Rajbari district. He was wanted in a number of cases filed for extortion, murder and other criminal activities.
Mahbubur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Sreepur Police Station, said they recovered the body in the morning after being informed by the locals and sent it to a local hospital for autopsy.
Rahman said they suspected Firoz might have been killed by his rivals.
