DU prof Zia sued over remarks on ‘Assalamu Alaikum’

A case has been filed against Zia Rahman, a professor at the Department of Criminology of Dhaka University, for his controversial remarks about ‘Assalamu Alaikum’ and ‘Allah Hafez’.

The case was filed with the court of Judge Assam Jaglul Hossain under the Digital Security Act on Sunday morning.

Muhammad Mahbub Alam, editor of monthly Al Bayyinat and the Daily Al Ihsan, filed the case with the Bangladesh Cyber Crimes Tribunal.

According to the case statement, Prof Zia made libelous remarks saying ‘Assalamu Alaikum’ and ‘Allah Hafez’ as abhorrent, reprehensible and a sign of extremism. He associated all these practices of Muslims with militancy.

Recently, in a talk show called ‘Uposhonghar’ (Conclusion) on DBC News television channel, Professor Zia Rahman described ‘Assalamu Alaikum’ and ‘Allah Hafez’ in pure Arabic pronunciation as disgusting.

The issue sparked huge criticisms on social media.

On October 22, Supreme Court lawyer Muhammad Sheikh Omar Sharif sent a legal notice to Prof Zia on behalf of Muhammad Mahbub Alam. He was asked to withdraw his statement and apologise.
