Dyke collapse: 100 fish enclosures washed away in Satkhira

Over 100 shrimp and fish enclosures in Shyamnagar upazila have been washed away as an embankment collapsed due to tidal surge.Three villages—Durgabati, Boyardanga and Bhamia—under Burigoalini union in the upazila were submerged by tidal water following the collapse of the Water Development Board (WDB) embankment near Durgabari Cyclone Centre on the west bank of the Kholpetua River early Friday.
Nikhil Kumar Dutta, section officer (Shyamnagar) of WDB-1, said the tidal surge damaged about a 50-metre portion of the embankment around 12am on Friday, flooding the three villages and washing away the fish enclosures.
Later, local people erected a ring dyke through voluntary labour to protect their dwelling houses and fish enclosures.
Nikhil said work to repair to damaged embankment could not start due to fund crunch. -UNB, Satkhira
