An extensive Rabi crop cultivation programme has been taken up in the district by the Department of AgricultureExtension (DAE) in the ensuing Rabi season to meet the requirements of district particularly the winter vegetable which has a recurring shortfall here.
According to the sources of DAE, a total of 1,55,118 hectares of land has been brought under Rabi crop cultivation programme with the aim of producing 9,17,025 tonnes of food grain, winter vegetables, oil seeds, spices and pulses.According to the source, Boro paddy of hybrid, Hyv and local variety will be cultivated on 35,225 hectares with the target of producing 13,913 tonnes of paddy while maize will be cultivated on 54 hectares to produce 347 tonnes.Wheat will be cultivated on 26,630 hectares of land to produce 73,860 tonnes of wheat. Potato and sweet potato will be cultivated on 212 and 231 hectares respectively for producing 4,382 tonnes of potato and 3,800 tonnes of sweet potato.According to the source mustard will be cultivated on 9,760 hectares to produce a total of 1,000 tonnes of edible oil.Ground nut will be cultivated on 4,196 hectares to produce 5,587 tonnes, sugarcane will be cultivated on 7,344 hectares to produce 3,52,512 tonnes of sugarcane ,the source said.The source said various types of pulses including lentil on 14,642 hectares, grain on 296 hectares, mug on 1,172 hectares, kheshari on 11,500 hectares, motor on 840 hectares and mashkalai on 2,751 hectares will be cultivated to produce a total of 27,700 tonnes of protein substitute food.A total of 4,486 hectares of land has been brought under different kinds of vegetable cultivation to produce 87,200 tonnes of vegetable.Onion will be cultivated on 27919 hectares to produce 1,72,652 tonnes of onion and garlic on 3,552 hectares for producing 21,690 tonnes of garlic.Spices including coriander seed and green chili will be cultivated on 6,412 hectares and 1,878 hectares to produce 7,876 and 2,217 tonnes respectively, the source said.The source further said that motivational and other preliminary work for achieving the target is underway. -BSS, Faridpur
