Extra fee issue: 3 principals face music

The government on Wednesday temporarily suspended the Monthly Pay Order (MPO) of the principals of three better known non-government schools and colleges of Dhaka for not returning the additional admission fees they charged this year. The three educational institutions are Viqarunnisa Noon School and College, Motijheel Ideal School and College and Manipur School and College.
The Ministry of the Education in a media statement said: “The MPO of the principals of three schools has been postponed as they failed to give a satisfactory explanation about not returning the additional admission fees realised from the admission-seekers during the admission to those institutions this year, or adjust it with the monthly fees.”
The ministry asked the Director-General of the Directorate of Secondary and Higher Education to explain why the MPO of the three principals should not be cancelled permanently.
An investigation committee formed by the ministry in its findings said on July 4 the three famous schools and colleges of the city together realised Tk 91.28 million during the admission procedures in addition to the amount stipulated in the admission policy.
Manipur School and College charged additional admission fees of Tk 52.37 million from 3,054 students, Motijheel Ideal School and College Tk 33.93 million from 2,667 students and Viqarunnisa Noon School and College Tk 6.81 million from 1,627 students.
In the wake of a public outcry over high admission fees charged by the non-government schools in the capital, the ministry on Jan 30 asked the schools which had already realised admission fees higher than the government-stipulated amount to return the extra money or adjust it with the monthly fees.
Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid told Parliament on July 2 that the registration of the educational institutions that did not return the extra admission fees would be cancelled.
Later, 14 of the 17 prominent non-government schools and colleges which charged additional fees returned the money to the admission-seekers or adjusted it with the monthly fees. – Agency
