Fairness cream may cause foul results

 Health Desk

The desire to get fair skin like your favourite Bollywood actor’s may ravage the natural beauty of your face as most fairness creams available in the market contain steroids. This warning was issued by doctors at an event organized to make people aware about the side effects of steroids being used in fairness and antifungal creams.

Doctors believe that over the past two to three years, cases of skin infection increased from 2% to 15% as a result of application of fairness creams. The side effects of long-term use of these creams include growth of unwanted facial hair , acne, thinning of skin , discoloration of skin , and scarring. Anti-fungal creams containing steroids also increase the incidence of skin diseases.

Fluticasone and betamethasone are some of the steroids found in such creams, said the doctors. They were meeting under the auspices of the Ahmedabad Dermatological Society in association with the Gujarat branch of the Indian Association of Dermatologists, Venereologists and Leprologists (IADVL) and the IADVL task force against Topical Steroid Abuse.
