Earlier this year building proceeded on schedule. On November 4, 2017, the Bangladeshi regulatory authority (BAERA) issued a license for design and construction of the power plant. “The first concrete” marks the start of the main construction phase of Rooppur NPP.
Currently, more than 2,200 employees work at the site (including 450 Russian specialists). In the main construction period, a total number of employees at the site will reach 12,500 (including 2,500 specialists from Russia). Commissioning of Unit 1 of Rooppur NPP is scheduled for the year 2023, Unit 2 is scheduled for 2024.
Rooppur NPP with two VVER-1200 reactors and the total capacity of 2,400 MW is constructed on the basis of the Russian design 160 km away from Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh, in accordance with the general contract dated December 25, 2015. Russian design with VVER-1200 reactors that are currently implemented at Novovoronezh NPP Phase II has been selected for Rooppur NPP. The first unit of Novovoronezh NPP Phase II has already been put into commercial operation that makes this design the referent one. This is an evolutionary 3+ Generation design that fully meets international safety requirements. In 2017 the new Russian power unit at Novovoronezh NPP Phase II was named among the three best nuclear units in the world by the version of the high-profile international periodical POWER (USA).
The Rooppur NPP project is implemented within the framework of in-depth defence concept which is fundamental to the entire plant protection system. The main feature of in-depth defence which guarantees environmental protection is a concept of multi-layer protection and mitigation of hypothetic man-made accidents and human factor consequences. – Triune Group press release
