Flood situation worsens further in Gaibandha

Overall flood situation in the district further worsened as water
level of the Brahmaputra river rose by 40cm in last 24 hours ending
this morning.
Water level of another major river the Ghagot also increased by 26cm
during the period flooding some fresh areas in the district.
Officials of Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) said water
level in two major rivers of the district rose sharply during the
period due to rainfall and on rush of hilly waters from the upstream.
The Brahmaputra was flowing 43cm at Fulchharighat point and the Ghagot
44cm at New Bridge Road point above their respective danger levels
deteriorating further the overall flood situation in chars and river
basin areas.
With the rise of water level in the Brahmaputra river, the areas of
Chandipur, Kapasia unions under Sundarganj upazila, Kamarjani and
Mollarchar unions under Sadar upazila, Fazlupur, Erendabari, Gozaria
and Urya unions under Fulchhari upazila and Holdia and Saghata unions
under Saghata upazila have been inundated.
As a result, the standing crops particularly seedlings of T-Aman paddy
and seedbed of late variety Ganzia paddy including summer vegetables
went under flood water.
Nurunabi Sarker Sakmal, chairman of Kamarjani union of Sadar upazila,
said the flood water entered the houses of the char people of the
union and T-Aman paddy field including seedbeds of Ganzia paddy.
Apart from this, river erosion took a serious turn at many places
along both the sides of the river including Kaziarchar, Karaibari,
Kunderpara, Purba Batikamari, Gaabgachhi and Hasilkandi of the
district creating immense sufferings.
Many erosion and flood victims took shelter on the nearby flood
control embankment and flood shelter while their domestic animals and
poultry birds are facing a serious crisis of food and drinking water.
