Govt has opened ‘laboratory’ of perpetuating power: BNP

Criticising the government for what the party said its growing repressive acts, BNP on Tuesday alleged that the government has opened a ‘laboratory’ for promoting autocratic rule in a bid to perpetuate its illegal power.
“The grand alliance regime has opened a laboratory in Bangladesh for creating absolute fascism and  limitless undemocratic one-party autocratic rule to endanger democratic practice by intensifying hooliganism and terror attacks in a bid to prolong the power it has snatched from people,” BNP’s joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi told a press briefing on Tuesday. He said new barbaric and repressive measures like intimidating and suppressing the opposition’s democratic movement, repressing and harassing them, filing wholesale cases against them and arresting them indiscriminately, are being devised from the laboratory. “Deadly and brutal activities like anarchy, disorder, vengeance, killing and enforced disappearance are also being produced from the laboratory.”
The BNP leader also alleged that the issuance of the court summon after filing a ‘false’ case against BNP senior vice chairman Tarique Rahman is part of the government’s evil designs to divert people’s attention from the government’s misdeeds. “We strongly protest and condemn the government’s such move,” he added.
The BNP joint secretary also demanded the government immediately withdraw the court summon and ‘false’ case against Tarique.
On Monday, a Dhaka court summoned Tarique Rahman asking him to appear before it on December 10 in connection with a Tk-100 crore defamation case filed against him on charge of calling Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman a ‘Pakbandhu’ (Friend of Pakistan).
Rizvi said the government is trying to hang onto power by filing cases, issuing court summons and intimidating and threatening the opposition leaders and activists by controlling the all state institutions. “They’re least concerned about the country’s socio-economic development.”
He also said that Prime Minister’s adviser HT Imam through his speech at a programme of Chhatra League has exposed the government’s evil plans and misdeeds, he said. – UNB
