Dhaka, Sept 1 (UNB) – BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Sunday alleged that the government is conspiring to annihilate its opponents after “destroying democratic structures through repressive acts”.
“The government has continued all types of plots to wipe out opposition politics and disagreements. As part of it, our leader Khaleda Zia has been put behind bars unlawfully,” he said.
The BNP leader further said, “There’s no democracy in the country as the democratic structures have been destroyed through repression and suppression. That’s why BNP must restore democracy and free our leader (Khaleda) through a united struggle together with people. We’ve taken such a vow on this day.”
Fakhrul came up with the remarks while talking to reporters after placing wreaths at the grave of BNP founder Ziaur Rahman together with party leaders and activists marking its 41st founding anniversary.
He said the birth of BNP is an important incident in Bangladesh’s political history as the party restored democracy in the country and introduced multiparty democracy.
The BNP leader regretted that the party which annihilated democracy by establishing one-party rule Baksal in 1975 is now again trying to destroy its opponents to abolish democracy.
“We’re now doing politics in a very adverse situation. Our founding anniversary programmes have been obstructed across the country. This manifests that the government doesn’t want to allow opposition to use the minimum democratic space,“ he observed.
Fakhrul said the government is against democracy as it wants to hang onto power by resorting to repressive acts.
He said their party now wants to focus on two demands — release of Khaleda Zia and a credible fresh election under a neutral government cancelling the results of 11th parliamentary election. “We’ll intensify our movement to realise the two demands.”
