Govt silent over border killings, alleges BNP

Dhaka, Sept 13 – BNP on Sunday alleged that the government has been playing the role of a “silent spectator” over the killing of Bangladeshis “by Indian Border Security Force (BSF) due to its knee-jerk policy”.“The overall situation of the country is so bad and its sovereignty is so weak that people are getting killed along the border after every two or three days,” said BNP senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi ahead of the scheduled BGB-BSF border conference.
Speaking at a programme of Jatiyatabadi Swechchasebak Dal at BNP’s Nayapaltan central office, he also said 33 people have been killed by the BSF this year. “But you’re so subservient government that you can’t even protest any such incident.”
Meanwhile, the border conference between Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and BSF was postponed as the Indian delegation failed to reach Dhaka due to a technical glitch in their aircraft. The conference was scheduled to be held in Dhaka from September 13 to September 18.
Referring to Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul Momen’s remark that India-Bangladesh relationship is like that between a “husband and a wife”, Rizvi questioned how BSF are killing the country’s people when it has such a tie with the neighbouring country. “The minister’s such comment has exposed how lowly loyal you are.”
The BNP leader, however, said their party believes in ‘friendly relations’ with all countries. “Our party’s policy is to maintain friendly relations with all the neighbouring and distant countries without harming our own interests. “But Sheikh Hasina is sacrificing the interests of her own country to hang onto power. It’s very unfortunate for the nation.”
Rizvi alleged that although the BNP leaders and activists are being sent to jail cancelling their bails, the ‘corrupt’ ruling party men are getting bail. “Even, GK Shamim who has a scam involving Tk 6,000 crore has been granted bail in secret. Think what a terrible situation is prevailing in the country!”
He also said the Anti-Corruption Commission and the law enforcement agencies could not even touch the ‘godfathers’ who plundered huge public money and got its share.
“Awami League has now turned into a party of looters. This is the reality. If you open a newspaper every day, you will see the evidence in support of it,” Rizvi added. – UNB
