Dhaka, June 26 – BNP on Friday alleged that the government is ‘suppressing’ opposition leaders and activists through various repressive acts to continue its ‘corruption and plunder’.“There’s no security in public life. The leaders and activists of opposition parties are being jailed while the ruling party ones are roaming around and indulging in corruption and plundering,” said BNP senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi.
He further said, “You (govt) are suppressing the opposition by making our leaders and activists disappeared, sending them to jail in false cases, to carry out corruption, looting, and plunder the resources of the state. It can’t be continued for a long time.”
Rizvi came up with the allegation while talking to reporters after placing wreaths at BNP founder Ziaur Rahman’s grave along with party’s newly appointed Dhaka north city unit general secretary Abdul Alim Naki.
He said the International Day in Support of Victims of Torture is being observed today (Friday) across the world at a time when people have been subjected to extrajudicial killing, enforced disappearance and repressions.
“The state is involved in all these misdeeds. Violent attacks, torture and inhumane acts are being carried out on dissidents. All the instruments of the state are being used to suppress dissent. These things are happening as there’s no democracy,” the BNP leader observed.
He alleged that those who raise voice against the government and speak in favour of democracy are being made disappeared or jailed implicating them in ‘false’ cases. “This is the current situation of the country. Bangladesh is now an example of an inhuman state where leading a normal life is not possible .”
Rizvi urged BNP leaders and activists not to get disappointed, but to continue their efforts for the restoration of democracy braving all the obstacles and repressive acts. – UNB
