The government has taken a plan to plant saplings along 652 km roads in the current fiscal year with a view to recouping damages recently done to the environment by felling trees in the name of movement. Environment and Forest Minister Anwar Hossain Manju said this in Parliament replying to a written question from Mustafa Lutfullah (Satkhira-1) on Thursday.The Forest Department has planned to make a strip of garden by roads stretching 652 kms under its various development projects in 2013-2014 fiscal year.
Answering a starred question of SM Abul Kalam Azad (Dhaka-17), the minister said a total of 22.50 lakh hectares of land are forested in the country.
Of them, 15.2 lakh hectares forest lands are under the Forest Department and the rest 7.30 lakh hectares under the district administrators of Chittagong Hill Tracks. – UNB
