Gulshan café attack ‘arms supplier’ held

The Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) arrested the suspected arms supplier of the Gulshan café attack from the city’s Banani area on Tuesday night.

The arrestee was identified as ‘Boro Mizan’, 60, the main arms supplier of militant group ‘Neo JMB’. He allegedly supplied firearms and ammunition to the militants who attacked Holey Artisan Bakery at Gulshan in the city on July 1 last.

Based on secret information, a special action group of the CTTC stopped a bus at Kakoli crossing of Banani and arrested Boro Mizan from the vehicle, said DMP Deputy Commissioner (Media) Masudur Rahman.

Boro Mizan, who is reportedly in-charge of Neo JMB’s Shibganj unit in Chapainababganj, was previously the chief operational commander of militant organisation Al Tawheed. Later, he joined Neo JMB through slain militant leader Tamim Chowdhury.

The arms consignment, including grenades and pistols used by the attackers of Gulshan café, was brought to Dhaka through the Mizan’s syndicate.

Later, the arms consignment was sent to Tamim Chowdhury at Tanvir Quadri’s Bashundhara residence, said a CTTC officer preferring anonymity.

On July 1 last year, seven militants stormed the Holey Artisan Bakery and opened fire and took around 40 people, including restaurant staff and guests — both locals and foreigners — hostage. Twenty hostages, including nine Italians, seven Japanese, one Indian, one Bangladeshi-born American and two Bangladeshis — were killed in the terror attack on the restaurant before the commando operation ended the crisis.

Besides, two senior police officers — Banani Police Station officer-in-charge Salauddin Ahmed Khan and Detective Branch assistant commissioner Robiul Islam — were killed as they tried to rescue the hostages.
