‘Halt Ramphal plant construction before proper EIA’

South Asians for Human Rights (SAHR) on Sunday called for halting the Rampal coal fired power plant construction in the Sunderbans until it is cleared by neutral environmentalists.
Addressing a press conference at the National Press Club in Dhaka SAHR members expressed the fear of adverse impact on the largest mangrove forest in the world from the said thermal power plant.“We demand suspension to all construction works and other project activities until a comprehensive science based environmental impact assessment (EIA) is conducted by impartial and independent experts,” said Sharif Jamil of the SAHR.
He said that an environmental impact assessment report, prepared by a government organisation, was faulty on many points.
Sultana Kamal and Asif Nazrul, members of SAHR in Bangladesh were among those who spoke at the press conference. – News Desk
