HC wants to know of steps taken to manage medical wastes

Dhaka, July 19 – The High Court on Sunday asked the government about steps taken in implementing Medical Waste Management and Processing Rules 2008.
A virtual bench of Justice JBM Hasan passed the order after hearing a writ petition filed in the form of public litigation.
The secretary of the forest and environment ministry has been asked to submit the report to the court by August 10.
At the same time, the court has fixed August 12 for the next order.
Barrister Mohammad Humayun Pallab appeared for the writ petitioners and he was assisted by Barrister Mohammad Kawsar while Deputy Attorney General Debashish Bhattacharya and Assistant Attorney General Mohammad Saiful Alam represented the state.
Environment researcher Dr Anika Ali and Barrister Pallab filed the writ petition with the concerned bench of the High Court on July 14 on behalf of the human rights organisation Law and Life Foundation.
The writ petition sought directives for the formation of departmental authority as per Medical Waste Management and Processing Rules 2008, segregation of medical waste, packaging, transportation and storage, determination of area for disposal of medical waste and purification, removal and burning of medical waste as per relevant standards.
In the writ petition, 18 people including the secretary of the ministry, health secretary, director general of health service and mayors of all city corporations were made respondents. – UNB
