Chattogram, Oct 30 (UNB) – A husband has been detained for allegedly killing his wife by strangulation at Potia upazila of the district on Wednesday after his wife didn’t allow him to marry a second time.
The deceased housewife Hajera Begum, 45, was the daughter of late Fazal Ahammad of Shekher Khil area under Bashkhali Napura number five ward of Chattagram. The husband Shamsul Alam is the son of Zafar Ahmad of the same locality.
The killing took place at Kelishohor Gucchogram area of the upazila early morning. Police detained husband Shamsul Alam, 40, on charge of killing his wife Hajera Begum.
Borhanuddin, OC of Potia police station, said that the body of the woman was recovered in the morning and later sent to Chattogram Medical College Hospital for autopsy.
Locals informed that Shamsul Alam and Hajera eloped and got married 12 years ago. It was Hajera’s second marriage. After that they came to Potia Guchhogram from Bashkhali and lived there. However in the 12 years they didn’t have any child. Hajera Begum had two sons from her first marriage.
The neighbours informed that for the past few days, Shamsul Alam was torturing wife Hajera to permit him to marry a second time. The torture was increasing as Hajera was not allowing him.
Things came to a head on Wednesday morning, and after killing Hajera by strangling her Shamsul tried to escape but locals detained him.
Later being informed, the police took him into custody.
