India excellent model in resolving territorial, maritime disputes: US

Dhaka- The United States has said India has provided the world with an excellent model of how a large power can peacefully resolve territorial and maritime disputes with its smaller neighbors.“By accepting the results of international arbitration on disputed maritime claims in the Bay of Bengal, India – along with Bangladesh and Burma – has created a template for others to follow,” said Nisha Desai Biswal, Assistant Secretary, Bureau of South and Central Asian Affairs.
She made the remark while giving testimony before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Washington, DC, on U.S.-India Relations: Balancing Progress and Managing Expectations, according a message received here from US Department of State on Tuesday.
Biswal said nowhere is this expressed more clearly than in our Joint Strategic Vision for the Asia Pacific and Indian Ocean Region, issued by US President Barack Obama and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi last year, which enshrined their mutual commitment to safeguarding maritime security and ensuring freedom of navigation and overflight throughout the region, including in the South China Sea.
“Taken together, it is clear that a strong and long-term strategic partnership with India is the best way we can ensure open and secure access to the global commons across the Indo-Pacific and beyond,” she said.
