India sweeps series with emphatic victory over Tigers

KOLKATA – Bangladesh could survive only 48 minutes of the third day before India completed an innings and 46-run win over them in the second Test, a maiden day-night affair for both of the teams with pink ball, to seal the series 2-0 at iconic Eden Gardens here on Sunday.

Mahmudullah Riyad, sustained a hamstring injury and subsequently retired hurt for 39 on day two, didn’t come to bat, as Bangladesh ended their second innings on 195-9 in 41.1 overs.

Fast bowler Umesh Yadav took all the remaining three wickets on day three to finish with 5-53, his third five-for in Test cricket after Bangladesh resumed on 152-6. Ishant Sharma had figures of 4-56.

Indian fast bowlers claimed available 19 wickets in this match to help the side seal their fourth consecutive innings victory and a record 12th series win at home.

Mushfiqur Rahim was the highest scorer for Bangladesh in this innings with 74, while Al-Amin Hossain made 21.

Bangladesh was bowled out for 106 in its first innings, before India declared on 347-9.

The Tigers lost the first Test in Indore by an innings and 130-run margin.

Mushfiqur Rahim’s stubborn batting was key in helping the side takes the Test into the third day when a two-day victory for India looked highly likely.

But they had to do little work to complete the inevitable. Yadav bounced out Ebadot Hossain in just third over of the day to indicate an early finish even though Mushfiqur Rahim continued his resistance with aggression and caution.

Al-Amin hot got a nasty hit on his helmet by a Yadav bouncer, making the dressing room worried.

He regained his composure and played some good shot that even could make the top order batsmen ashamed.

At this point, it looked Bangladesh could avoid the innings defeat at least. Umesh Yadav however shattered that hopes with a slower to induce a false shot from Mushfiqur and ended the knock of 74 off 96, studded with 13 fours.

After the bowlers’ good work, India captain Virat Kohli struck a sublime 136, his 27th Test century and 20th as a captain to help India take position of dominance.

India declared their first innings with 241-run lead. Bangladesh however failed to deal with Indian pacers once again, resulting their another humiliating defeat.BSS
