Inhabitants evacuated from 321 risky Dhaka buildings

Though 321 identified risky buildings of Dhaka city are yet to be demolished completely, the two city corporations of Dhaka and Rajdhani Unnayan Kattripakkha (RAJUK) have started demolishing the buildings to save the lives of its inhabitants.

However, the inhabitants of the buildings – 17 owned by the government and the rests are private owned – are already been evacuated. Gradually the buildings will be demolished and new buildings will be built as per the government’s approval, Disaster Management and Relief Secretary Md. Shah Kamal told reporters replying to a query at a briefing held at the secretariat yesterday.

The press conference was organized to brief media on the preparation on tackling disaster of the country and observing the ‘National Disaster Preparedness Day, 2017’ to be observed on Friday.

Disaster Management and Relief Minister Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury Maya briefed media about its entire preparation and future initiatives of his ministry and subordinate offices.

Director General of the Department of Disaster Management Reaz Ahmed, additional secretaries of the ministry Awlad Hossain and Satyabrata Saha and other senior officials also present.

Shah Kamal said the government had to wait for a long time to start demolishing the buildings as most of those are private owned properties. Only a few are government owned. Among the private owned, there are stay orders from the High Court on demolishing four buildings.

In reply to a question, Maya said that a huge amount of funds, which was deposited to the Pakistani government’s treasury during the flood of 1970, are still there. They have not handed over those to Bangladesh after the Liberation War of 1971.

“Bangladesh has yet to get back its share of assets from Pakistan after the liberation war. The government will take necessary steps to realize the assets from the country. The Prime Minister will take necessary initiatives in this connection,” he added.
